Kentmere, at the southern end of the Eastern Fells, is one of the areas missed by many walkers as they drive past to Windermere. The Kentmere fells are usually quieter than the more popular central areas of the Lake District.

The hills around Kentmere and the Eastern Fells tend to be grassy and rolling, compared to the rocky peaks in the more popular areas. This means walks tend to be easier, but also gives the chance for longer distance walks.

The most well-known walk is the Kentmere Round - up the serrated ridge over Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick, then around Mardale Ill Bell, the Nan Bield Pass, and back down over the smoother Harter Fell and Kentmere Pike. This walk lasts for nearly 18km.

The Kentmere Round is often split to include one of the main ridges, and then branching off to the other nearby peaks, including Adam Seat and Stony Cove. If transport wasn't a problem, it could even be extended to walking the full High Street ridge (see the Eastern Fells page).
